Last January, a team of researchers led by Dr Gerard Dooly from the University of Limerick (UL), have investigated a series of unknown shipwrecks off the west coast of Ireland.
Aboard the Research Vessel Celtic Explorer, they used a new automated underwater vehicle nicknamed Étáin to carry out the surveys in highly challenging environments and obtained rewarding results.
This kind of action serves as an example baseline scenario for one of the JRA (Joint Research Actions) EUMarineRobots tasks, specifically Advanced vision, acoustic and manipulation systems for automated inspection and intervention operations.
